Sunday Thought: A Mother for All Seasons

Received in the mail a few days ago, inside a card addressed to my wife, reprinted by permission:

I know this is really late for Mother's Day, but since you are the best mom ever, you should get a Happy Mother's Day every day! I wish I could have been home for it. Simply said, you are my best friend - I don't know any of my friends that would send me money when I'm broke or work three jobs to help make all of my dreams come true. You are there for Ebes and me day and night, 365 days a year, and don't think that goes unnoticed. I don't know how you balance everything in your life and continue to always be such a wonderful mom. You are going to have to share your secret with me one day.

You are the definition of unselfish - you put your family before everything, even yourself and for that I just want to say thank you and I love you.

xoxo
Bern

It seemed nice enough to me, but she, the "mom" in question, standing behind the couch as she read it to me, could hardly finish. A few moments later, on her way out of the room, she remarked that she didn't want them to be grown up anymore. She wanted them home again.

Girls.

ah the paradox of motherly love. it works toward its own demise, and gives so that it can no longer be needed. in c. s. lewis' Four Loves he says even this love can turn bad unless its sublimated by divine love.

UUhhhh...what?

Well, this love has not turned bad, and gives no evidence of being in demise.

Bern & Ebe are lucky young women. Even by the high standard of mother's love that's pretty intense. Even I was moved and I'm not easily moved by this stuff.

You old hardass. Just for being moved I'm going to post some more pictures of them.

Ah yes my secret plan worked!! :-)

I do feel a bit put off that being Bern's number one Central Ohio golf fan has gone largely unnoticed by Bern. Why don't I get tributes like that for having developed blisters that one August day? Eighteen holes...I'm tired just thinking about it. Though tis true I wasn't the one swinging a club...

Actually, she has noticed, just doesn't bother to say thank you. She also knows you quoted her in STG.

Ts, for the record...thank you :)
I appreciate all the support, however, I'm sad to report that I have recently quit the golf profession. The exciting thing for me is that I can now enjoy a beer or two while playing instead of boring water. :) Dad, I can still beat you.

We'll see. You're falling out of practice. You're moving back in my direction. Bring cash to the encounter.

My money's still on Bern. It's easier moving towards 30 yrs old than moving towards [*deleted*]. :)

Thanks Bern for your thanks! No need to thank me. Seriously, you'll always have the thrill of playing at that level. More than me or your dad have done.

Although I should mention that I was runner-up B-league fraternity champ in racquetball in '85 at my alma mater. You know it ain't braggin' if it's true.

B league?

TS said...

That's what makes it hilarious... it's the piling up of mediocrities. "fraternity"..."b-league"..."runner-up".

You taking up Mr. Culbreath's tag?

I'm thinking about it. I don't know how to come up with 30 things, since almost everything bothers me. Maybe I'll just steal your list.

Re: "since almost everything bothers me". I know what you mean. I had the devil of a time coming up with my 30. It was eye-opening how bothered I apparently am.

I guess I could rename my blog "What's Wrong With the World" but for the fact that's already taken.

You know, re-reading Bern's tribute I'm now really sorry we didn't get to meet Mrs. Luse.

Yeah, she's okay.
