The only good news

that occurs to me at the moment is that the LPGA is in Portland, Oregon this week. It's good because I'm a fan of one of the girls playing in it. It's been a tough year, but you never know when things might turn around.

I knew her when she was a kid. When she comes through town we put her up for the night, cook her good food, and even let her bring her dog in the house. She has an infectious laugh and a great smile...except when she doesn't want her picture taken.

You never told her her face would freeze in that position?

It was too late. Now her boyfriend has to live with it.

Good to hear she has a boyfriend.

It is, is it? For whom?

I always thought "it is not good for man to be alone" applied to women too, but it's certainly a debatable point.

She wasn't alone. She had me and her mother. And I had the dog. But she thinks she's all grown up now and wants to strike out on her own. What's not good is for Dad to be without a dog.

Speaking of dogs, the Catechism says, "It is likewise unworthy to spend money on them that should as a priority go to the relief of human misery."

Hmmm..I guess that's one of degree? I mean really there's enough human misery that you could eliminate all spending on dogs but then that would add to my own human misery, albeit of a trivial nature. I suppose it's legalistic to want a dollar amount. My uncle argues that spending $1000 for healing his dog was better than going on a cruise given that the enjoyment he would receive from the expected gain in years the dog would live would exceed the short-term thrill of a cruise.

So even spending a large amount seems justifiable, at least if you're putting it next to a vacation.

Are you sure the "them" in the Catechism refers to dogs? There must be some mistake.
