I think one thing to be optimistic about here is that there has been some support for Terri Schiavo coming from some unexpected places: Sen. Tom Harkin, Jesse Jackson, Sen. Joseph Lieberman, the other Democratic senators and representatives who voted to err on the side of life, and support from myriad disability rights groups. I read an article on Yahoo the other day in which a self-proclaimed "liberal, lesbian, atheist" who was protesting outside Terri Schiavo's hospice said she would trust her life to right-wing Christians before she would the ACLU. Amazing.

I think this tragedy could bring about conversions to Christianity and the pro-life cause. By the end of it I had the idea that he wanted her to die...and I was very disappointed: I had hoped he would write something better than that.

Derbyshire doesn't surprise me at all: in fact, I've always been a bit surprised that so many Catholics seem to like him. I find his articles interesting sometimes, but I really don't agree with him very often and I'm not at all surprised that he would support killing Terri Schiavo.

Nice lyrics, Pat. Too bad hardly anyone today would understand them. They might as well be written in hieroglyphics for as much sense as they'd make to the average American today. Instead of loving people, we love their personality, or their beauty, or their intelligence, or their usefulness. And when that slips away, as far as we're concerned they're gone. At the time I was a callow, agnostic, possibly atheistic young thing who had not the stomach for it. But at least I had pity and some degree of empathy (it's hard to clear God from your soul), qualities on the wane these days. I wonder what ever happened to the 'hopeless' cases, the ones whose situations were no different from Terri's except that they were born that way.William Lusehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15928946919078483848noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3712012.post-1116904162630528872005-05-23T23:09:00.000-04:002005-05-23T23:09:00.000-04:00I pray that there is still hope for Terri. The Divine Mercy Novena seems especially fitting this year.

William, it was interesting to hear about your visit to Sunland (now Tacachale) in Gainesville. I started volunteering there as a college student with a Church group. At first I was appalled at the seemingly overwhelming needs, but I found that by becoming a "sponsor" or special friend, I could make a difference to that one child. I now sponsor two women and am a legal guardian for another.

Since the 1970's almost 2/3 of the residents have moved into ARC or other group homes in the community. Those remaining at Tacachale now live in a much more "normal setting," with jobs, nice residences, and frequent trips into Gainesville.
Contact with and affirmation from people who see beyond their disabilities make all the difference

These special people have enriched my life beyond anything I could have imagined. I am most grateful to have them in my life, and I pray that God will protect them from those who do not see their beauty and value as children of God.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3712012.post-1116904100511645092005-05-23T23:08:00.000-04:002005-05-23T23:08:00.000-04:00I remember that poem. For too many Catholic intellectuals, the Pope is just another guy with an opinion to which we ought to listen politely, then make up our own minds. Intellectual pride is a sin that can land one in hell as easily as any number of others. As a convert to Catholicism from the Church of Christ, I have been depressed by how many of our priests have refused to fall in line with the Church's teachings on end of life issues. Just this morning, I saw two columns in Newsweek that dealt with Terri Schiavo's situation and whether or not to kill her. One column was by a Jewish rabbi, the other column by a Catholic priest and bioethicist.
