Evening Petition

Oh Lord bless my kids and wife,
Grant them health and length of life;
Do with me whate'er you will,
I'll do their time, pay the bill.

For them suspend the worldly rule
That slays the wise and spares the fool;
They know no sin, compared to me;
You have your man, let these go free.

For them I'd run the laws aground,
Decree the jagged rocks be round,
Command the waves break 'neath the sea
To shield this ship so close to me.

By law the saints must ride your cross,
Their blood be spilled, count all as loss,
But - it was done, for once, for all,
So why this shadow of Adam's fall

O'er all our days, whose light and worth
You knew as man alive on earth?
As Judge, give justice to my plea:
I'm your man, let the good go free.
